Co-developed Device Removes Bacteria in Cogeneration Cooling Water with Zero Chemical Inputs Using Photocatalysis

Tokai Rika Co., Ltd. ("Tokai Rika") and Matsumura Oil Research Corp. have co-developed a photocatalytic device for the removal of bacteria, which will be installed in the cogeneration cooling system in Tokai Rika's main plant, reducing bacteria levels in the cooling water without the use of chemicals.

This technology combines a device that reduces the bacteria levels in cooling water-a process that has conventionally involved the use of chemicals-through a photocatalytic reaction (a reaction that generates a powerful oxidizing action via light exposure, which breaks down organic substances at the catalyst surface) with a device that prevents the solidification of hard elements in water through a high-frequency reaction (a reaction that generates negative ions with antioxidant action using high-frequency waves), making it possible to achieve the same effect as chemical inputs. This technology entirely eliminates chemical inputs, which will enable chemicals to be reduced by 1,200 kg annually.

The co-developed photocatalytic device for the removal of bacteria provides a safe reaction using light, making it easy to handle, and bringing cooling water closer to a natural state. The device consists of screw-type blades coated with a photocatalyst arranged in multiple layers, thus maximizing the surface area of the reaction and reducing the size of the device (one-third of the conventional size). Furthermore, the device is economical because the photocatalyst, which is renewable, can be used semi-permanently.

Tokai Rika will continue to actively move forward with the research, development and installation of this new technology, which is both environmentally and user-friendly, and will strive to create clean plants by actively reducing substances that affect the environment and by reducing overall waste material.

Tokai Rika intends to deploy this technology at the plant at its head office by March, 2007, and at all other Tokai Rika plants by March 2008.
