Tokai Rika implements jointly developed rotary-type dry distillation system to achieve zero emissions

Aichi, Japan, April 10, 2006 - Tokai Rika Co., Ltd., announced the implementation of a rotary-type dry distillation system developed in collaboration with North Japan Technos Co., Ltd., in a bid to construct an industrial waste recycling system at its head office's plant in cooperation with its sales agency, Toyota Tsusho Corporation.

The new rotary-type dry distillation system decomposes the composites of resins and metals-previously difficult to recycle and disposed of in landfills-into oil, metal, and charcoal (reprocessable into activated charcoal, etc.) to make 99% of its input waste materials recyclable. The horizontally rotating furnace contributes to the downsizing of the system unit, and it can efficiently perform a series of decomposition processes in a short period of time. The companies have high expectations that the system will contribute significantly to promoting environmental protection and the effective utilization of resources.

Tokai Rika has aggressively pursued its 3R activities-Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle-to reduce the amount of industrial waste for landfills to the zero emission level. By implementing this system at Tokai Rika and its group companies both in Japan and overseas, the company aims to further strengthen the entire Tokai Rika group's commitment to attaining the goal of zero emissions.

The rotary dry distillation system is capable of processing up to 60 kg of industrial waste per day and is expected to start operating at head office's plant from April 2006. Tokai Rika's other plants are scheduled to implement the system in January 2007, followed by Tokai Rika's group companies in December of the same year. Taking the waste volume recorded during fiscal year ended March 31, 1995, as 100, Tokai Rika aims to reduce the amount of industrial waste for landfills by 99.5% by the end of fiscal year 2010.
